Ferdinando Scianna was born in Bagheria – Sicily in July 1943. He is a photographer and a writer, he is deeply Sicilian and yet a citizen of the world, he has lived in different places: Milan, Paris, New York and he has travelled all over the world, he won dozens of awards and he was the first Italian photographer to become a member of Magnum agency.
Manuel Vàzquez Montalbàn wrote about him:” Scianna does not travel to find out that every journey as well as earth – is round, but because he comes back from each journey with a suitcase full of pictures, of visible thoughts… Scianna is himself, when he organizes reality through his eyes, when the journey’s challenge is to find out every little thing that journey can reveal. Therefore he travels like a conqueror of gestures and situations, with a spirit of adventure”. (Le forme del Caos). Scianna indeed thinks that a photographer is not an artist or a painter, who can stay in his house on the cliffs, painting images coming out of his memory, a photographer is someone who looks for images and finds them in real life. Images are there and the ability of a good photographer is to understand when they represent a meaningful instant, where meaningful means that they tell something about the story behind the image itself. ... http://photoitaly.net/2014/02/22/scianna/
